Our Half Bath Plan

Brrr! The last week or two has had us stuck in the house working on house projects. After painting our living room and part of the kitchen/foyer, we wanted to figure out what our next project should be. We decided to tackle the half bath. Since it will be one of the spaces used by guests (when we start entertaining again), I knew I wanted to give it the right updated feel. The 1990s were stuck in this half bath, from the low vanity and shell shaped sink, to the shiny brass fixtures and textured wallpaper. It was in need of a major update!

Thomas and I are both visual people as well as “number” people so I got to work coming up with two very different design plans and a spreadsheet showing the two options so we could compare pricing across different stores. I worked on these while Thomas began tearing down the wallpaper. He even got some help from the big kids.

Before I knew it, Thomas had torn out almost the entire bathroom! The wallpaper was down, the wallpaper adhesive that was still on the wall was down, and the vanity and light were torn out. What a difference just those things made!

Two ideas floated through my head for this space and they are very different from each other. The first plan, Plan 1 is more modern and trendy while Plan 2 is more of a classic look. I’m so torn between the two! Take a look and let me know what you think.

Design Plan 1

Half Bath Design Plan 1

Design Plan 1 has a trendy feel to it and gives the space an updated feel. I love the pop of color that the navy vanity provides against the white walls. We plan to put carry the same custom wall color into the bathroom. It may seem funny to be replacing 1990s brass with brass/gold fixtures and hardware, but with the right style and the right shade of brass or gold, this trend remains classy and timeless. The plan also features a peel and stick wallpaper that I found from Lowe’s by Scott Living. Instead of using wallpaper I’m planning on DIYing this project. My plan is to put the accent wall behind the toilet so it is seen first thing when you walk in the door.

Design Plan 2

Design Plan 2 brings in classic colors, traditional lines, and a timeless feel. This design plan features DIY board and batten that will have a grasscloth wallpaper above. The grasscloth wallpaper brings in a soft color and adds texture to the walls. Chrome fixtures in a classic style bring the whole look together.

  1. Hi Virginia and Thomas, we went with a gold and black color scheme in our powder room. It is stunning! I do have two comments you may find useful. 1) I think the tall faucet will lead to more splashing on your countertop as people will hold their hands higher than they would with a more traditional faucet shape. 2). I have used the peel and stick wallpaper and it is nice not to have the water mess, however I felt like the one we used tended to stretch a bit more than traditional wallpaper. That said I wouldn’t be afraid to use it again. I’ll send you a couple photos of our powder room to Thomas’ email.
